New product development

Stanelco PLC 30 September 2003 Stanelco plc Edible food sachets This announcement is made in response to a recent press article about the Company. Stanelco the RF (radio frequency) applications group confirms that the Company has invented an RF process for sealing edible food sachets and is in discussions with a number of organisations, including Sainsbury's, about developing applications and licensing this technology to food manufacturers and brands. The sachets are made from starch that is obtained from renewable sources; it is edible, free from genetically modified materials, soluble in water and biodegradable. The Company is working closely with starch suppliers. With patents pending on this innovative use of RF technology, Stanelco is both in discussion with and currently seeking further partners with whom to develop and commercialise this technology. This is a separate process from that used to make foamed starch containers that the Company, in conjunction with Sainsbury's, announced in July. Chief executive, Ian Balchin said, 'We are at an early stage with this technology although the Company's vision is for a revolution in packaging for convenience food involving a reduction in packaging materials going to landfill. Applications for example could include pre-measured coffee, rice or packet soups where the whole packet is added to boiling water with no waste or spillage. We feel sure there are many applications to be investigated and developed.'
