Following an excellent result in 1998, it is disappointing to report on a very
poor first half in 1999.
Group sales fell by 17% compared with the record level achieved for the first
six months of 1998. Profit before tax fell from £350,000 to £117,000.
While operating costs have been restrained, Braime Pressings Limited has been
hit by a significant drop in sales owing to the loss of a major customer.
This business has not yet been replaced.
Braime Elevator Components Limited and Sarl S.E.T.E.M. have both been effected
by depressed sales in the agro-industry, particularly severe in the UK, and by
the high historic level of the pound which has drastically reduced margins.
In contrast our USA subsidiary, 4B Elevator Components Limited, has again
enjoyed a successful six months, increasing both sales and operating profit.
Although action is being taken to reduce operating costs and secure additional
sales, the Directors do not anticipate any improvement before the end of 1999.
Accordingly the Directors have decided to reduce the interim dividend from
3.40p to 3.00p. The dividend will be paid on 4th October 1999 to shareholders
on the register at the close of business on 6th September 1999.
