Pursuant to Section 198 of the Companies Act 1985, British American Tobacco
p.l.c. ("the Company") has been informed by a letter from Franklin Resources,
Inc and its affiliates ("Franklin) dated 19 August 2005 that, as of that date,
Franklin no longer has a notifiable interest in the issued ordinary share
capital of the Company.
