The issuer advises that the Purchase of Own Securities announcement released on
18 August 2003 at 17:00hrs under RNS: 79930 was released in error. The amount of
shares stated was incorrect. The correct announcement should read:



British American Tobacco plc announces that it has today purchased for
cancellation 827,000 of its ordinary shares from Cazenove & Co. Ltd at a price
of 634.7999p per ordinary share.
