                        DOW JONES SUSTAINABILITY INDICES


The Dow Jones Sustainability Indices have listed The British Land Company PLC as
world market leaders for the financial services sector for the second year
running.

The results of the annual review for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI)
are effective from the opening of equity markets on 20 September 2004.

John Ritblat, Chairman of British Land said "Our approach to corporate social
responsibility is based on clear commercial objectives and the need to take a
long-term sustainable view of our operations."
