BELLSOUTH CORPORATION 20 August 1999 FOR MORE INFORMATION: Jeff Battcher (404) 713 0274 SID BOREN TO RETIRE FROM BELLSOUTH IN SEPTEMBER ATLANTA - Sidney Boren, executive vice president of BellSouth Corporation, has elected to retire September 30, after more than 32 years in the telecommunications industry. In his current position, Boren has been BellSouth's chief strategist, and responsible for the company's corporate development and planning efforts. In addition, he has also been in charge of BellSouth's advertising, public relations and administrative functions. 'Sid has helped shape BellSouth into one of the most successful telecom companies in the world,' said F. Duane Ackerman, chairman and CEO of BellSouth. 'In addition, he has been a key player in our industry, helping guide it through myriad, complex issues. I have worked with Sid for many years and I have personally witnessed his insight and the significant impact he has had on BellSouth and the industry. We wish him the best in his retirement.' An engineering graduate with B.S and M.S degrees from the University of Mississippi, Boren began his BellSouth career in the summer of 1967, in his home state of Mississippi, as a student supervisor afer working for Gulf Oil, Shell Oil and the Army Corps of Engineers. He added various titles and responsibilities in network operations before moving to Birmingham, Ala. as Assistant Vice President, Switched Services. He was named Vice President - Corporate Affairs in 1984 and played an important role in helping determine the first strategic efforts for BellSouth, which began operations that year as a result of the divestiture of AT&T. He held a number of senior positions within the company, primarily in strategic planning and development, until being named Senior Vice President - Strategic Planning for BellSouth in January 1995. He was named to his current position in September 1997. BellSouth is a $24 billion communications services company. It provides telecommunications, wireless communications, cable and digital TV, directory advertising and publishing, and Internet and data services to nearly 34 million customers in 19 countries worldwide.
