BellSouth to consolidate domestic operations
under Vice Chairman Gary Forsee
Jere Drummond, Charlie Coe to retire
Nov. 27, 2001, Atlanta -BellSouth announced today a new organizational
structure that consolidates its domestic operations under the leadership of
Vice Chairman Gary Forsee. The new structure will better align the company to
take advantage of critical revenue-producing opportunities in this
increasingly competitive marketplace.
The Domestic Operations organization combines all of BellSouth's operations
that focus directly on meeting the total telecommunications demands of the
company's domestic retail and wholesale customers.
'These changes are designed to strengthen our growth strategies in domestic
voice and data,' said BellSouth Chairman and CEO Duane Ackerman. 'Bringing
together our domestic operations will further sharpen our focus and enable us
to be the leader in providing the next generation of telecommunications
products and services to our customers.
'Gary's extensive industry experience and expertise will be invaluable as we
turn our tradition of service excellence to the pursuit of new opportunities
in the delivery of broadband and long distance services,' said Ackerman.
Forsee currently serves as vice chairman of BellSouth and president of
BellSouth International. In addition to his new role, Forsee will continue to
serve on the board of directors of Cingular Wireless, where he currently
serves as chairman.
Also today, Jere Drummond, vice chairman, and Charlie Coe, president-Network
Services, announced that they will retire from the company, effective Dec. 31.
Ralph de la Vega, currently president-Broadband and Internet Services, will
become president-BellSouth Latin America operations, and will report to
Ackerman. Keith Cowan, BellSouth's chief planning and development officer,
will assume additional responsibilities for BellSouth's European operations
and will continue reporting to Ackerman.
'Ralph's strategic focus and managerial skills will be tremendous assets as we
continue to realize the growth potential in Latin America,' said Ackerman.
'And Keith's understanding and involvement in building our European operations
will allow us to maximize the value of our investments there.'
Richard Burns, currently network vice president for Georgia operations, has
been elected an officer of the company and will replace de la Vega as
president-Broadband and Internet Services.
The new structure and related officer changes become effective Jan. 1, 2002.
Drummond, Coe retirements
Drummond, who began his telecommunications career in 1962, has served
BellSouth in numerous capacities. He served three years as president and CEO
of BellSouth Telecommunications (BST) before being promoted to president and
CEO of BellSouth Communications Group in 1998. He has been vice chairman
since Jan. 1, 2000, directing the corporation's public relations, advertising,
external affairs and regulatory activities, and leading BellSouth's continued
efforts to enter long distance.
Coe began his BellSouth career in 1986 when he was named president of
BellSouth International. He became group president-Customer Operations for
BST in 1995, where he was responsible for sales, marketing and customer
service. He was promoted to president of BST in 1998, and has headed
BellSouth's Network Services operations, including Interconnection Services
and the deployment of Broadband and Internet services, since Jan. 1, 2000.
'BellSouth stands at the threshold of a robust future because of the
leadership we have had,' said Ackerman. 'Jere has played a tremendous role in
shaping BellSouth into the competitive company we are today. As vice
chairman, he has led our push to obtain long distance relief at the local and
federal levels, a push that has culminated in the strong filings for Georgia
and Louisiana now being considered by the FCC. Along the way, he has worked
unselfishly to make our communities better places in which to work and live.
'Likewise, Charlie has been an invaluable contributor to our success both
locally and internationally,' Ackerman continued. 'Under his direction as
head of Network Services, we've transformed our networks from analog voice to
digital data and become a communications company ready to seize the
opportunities of the digital world.'
Domestic Operations structure
The new domestic operation will include Customer Markets, Network Services,
Regulatory and External Affairs, and BellSouth's Advertising and Publishing
Group.
Reporting to Forsee will be Margaret Greene, president-Regulatory and External
Affairs, Rod Odom, president-Network Operations, Dick Anderson,
president-Customer Markets, and Elmer Smith, president-Advertising and
Publishing.
'This is a strong team of leaders with a proven track record for success,'
said Forsee. 'Working together, this new structure will only strengthen our
efforts to further develop and leverage revenue-producing opportunities
throughout our domestic organization.'
In addition to Forsee, Cowan and de la Vega, reporting to Ackerman will be Ron
Dykes, chief financial officer; Fran Dramis, chief information & e-commerce
officer; Charles Morgan, general counsel; Becky Dunn, senior vice president-
