AGM Statement
N Brown Group plc, the Manchester-based direct home shopping group, held its
Annual General Meeting today. At the meeting all eight resolutions were passed
by shareholders as detailed in the notice of the meeting.
Sir David Alliance CBE, Chairman, gave the following trading statement to the
meeting:
'Our past investment in customer recruitment, database and product development
has resulted in a 14% increase in turnover for the first 17 weeks of the
current year. This maintains the same rate of increase seen in the first two
months trading as indicated in the Preliminary Announcement issued in May.
'The increase in turnover is broadly spread over our main catalogues. Our
household and electrical range, a strong performer last year, increased its
turnover by a further 28% this year.
'Overall gross margin rates have been maintained and stocks have been well
managed, helped by our close working relationship with suppliers, some of whom
are here today.
'Our continuing long term investment in our customer database has resulted in
strong customer retention and good progress in recruiting more new customers.
I am delighted to report further increases in the number of customers buying
from our catalogues and in their level of spending.
'Our financial services and fulfilment divisions have performed well since the
year end.
'We continue to invest in the future, examples being the extension to our
highly automated warehouse at Shaw, which will be completed this year, and a
new 1,000 seat call centre located in Manchester, which will be operational
early next year.
'Ladies and Gentlemen I am pleased with our progress in markets which continue
to be difficult and feel confident that with a flexible, innovative and
focused management team, we will make further good progress this year.'
