MAARTEN VAN DEN BERGH TO JOIN BT BOARD
BT today announced that Maarten van den Bergh, former
president of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and former
managing director of the Royal Dutch/Shell group of
companies, will join the BT board on September 1, 2000,
as a non-executive director.
Sir Iain Vallance, chairman of BT, said: 'I am delighted
to welcome Maarten van den Bergh to our board. He brings
with him vast experience as the most senior executive in
one of the world's largest corporations, particularly in
leading the recent transformation of Shell into 'the
group of the future'.'
Maarten van den Bergh, announced his retirement from his
positions with the Royal Dutch group in February, 2000.

Biographical details
Maarten van den Bergh was appointed a managing director
of the Royal Dutch Shell Group of companies in July 1992
and president of Royal Dutch Petroleum and vice chairman
of the Committee of Managing Directors in July 1998.
During those years he was deeply involved in transforming
Shell into 'the group of the future'.
He joined Shell International in 1968 and held a number
of financial and operational posts around the world
before returning to pure finance in 1983 as Deputy Group
Treasurer - a London posting at the time of the City's
'big bang'. In 1987 he moved to Thailand as Chairman of
all Shell companies in the region and in 1989 was
appointed Area Co-ordinator for the East and Australia
and then regional co-ordinator for the Western Hemisphere
and Africa.
Now 58, Maarten van den Bergh was born in New York but
has Dutch nationality. He graduated in Economics from the
University of Groningen, in the Netherlands. He is
married with two daughters.
