VIAG Interkom goes for mobile Internet
Tiscali takes over fixed-network Internet operation planet-interkom
Munich. VIAG Interkom and Tiscali have agreed the sale of planet-interkom. The
Italian telecommunications provider will take over the Internet activity of
VIAG Interkom and run it within the framework of its European strategy.
Following the sale of its city-carrier stake and the spinning off of its
fixed-network business with effect from 1 March 2001, this is VIAG Interkom's
last step on the road to becoming a pure mobile communications provider of the
second and third generation.
Tiscali has agreed to pay to VIAG Interkom a consideration of
Euro15 million in cash and 4,141,758 new Tiscali shares, which at yesterday's
closing price of Tiscali shares is equivalent to a total consideration of
Euro77.6 million. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the first
half of 2001. On completion of the transaction the effective interest of VIAG
Interkom in Tiscali will be approximately 1.2 per cent.
'Of course this doesn't mean we are saying goodbye to the Internet', stresses
Maximilian Ardelt, CEO of VIAG Interkom. 'Rather, the company is concentrating
on mobile data services, including mobile Internet access. This is the future
of mobile communications and m-commerce for us.'
The customers of planet-interkom will still be able to use all aspects of this
Internet service in full as before. The contract is still subject to the
approval of the corporate committees and their regulatory clearance.
