GLOBAL BOND OFFERING

British Telecommunications plc announces its intention
today to issue a US Dollar denominated multi-billion SEC-
registered Global Bond offering (to include intermediate
and long maturities).  Investor roadshows will commence
the week of August 28.  Subject to market conditions,
launch and pricing of the issue is expected at the end of
the week commencing September 4 or early the following
week.  Merrill Lynch and Salomon Smith Barney have been
appointed Joint Lead Managers of the offering.
