BT CELLNET BASE GROWS TO 8.74 MILLION
- A THIRD OF ALL NEW CUSTOMERS BUY WAP PHONES -
BT Cellnet today reported rising sales of WAP, the first
of the new generation of mobile Internet phones. During
July to September WAP sales increased by 40% on the
previous three months, with 245,000 net new connections.
BT Cellnet is the UK's mobile Internet market leader with
420,000 WAP customers.
BT Cellnet's mobile Internet customers yield almost £100
more compared to the annual average revenue for voice-only
customers. 20% of all the calls made on WAP mobiles
are for accessing the Internet and e-mails.
David McGlade, BT Cellnet's newly appointed Managing
Director effective 1st October, commented: 'I am delighted
to be joining a business focused on profitable growth and
leadership in the mobile Internet. The mobile phone is
developing new capabilities rapidly. WAP is proving
popular with customers and already providing additional
revenues to BT Cellnet. We're going to see a lot of action
in this area as we continue to drive the development of the
mobile Internet experience.'
New connections for July to September take BT Cellnet's
total customer base to 8.74 million of which 5.19 million
are pre-pay customers and 3.55 million are contract
customers.
Note to editors
The 420,000 WAP customer base specifically excludes all
future sales expected by BT Cellnet's banking sector
partners.
