Appointment of Executive Director
The board of Caledonia Investments plc ('Caledonia') is pleased to announce the
appointment of John May as an executive director with effect from 1 September
2003.
Mr May has over 25 years experience in advising, managing and investing in
companies both listed and unlisted, gained from a career of over 20 years with
the Hambros Group, where from 1988 to 1994 he was joint managing director of
Hambro Countrywide plc (now renamed Countrywide Assured plc), and subsequently
with his own private equity investment business.
Commenting on the appointment, Tim Ingram, Chief Executive of Caledonia, said:
'I am delighted that John May has agreed to join us as an executive director.
His considerable knowledge and experience in corporate finance and private
equity will provide a valuable additional resource to our management team.'

(a) Mr May is currently non-executive chairman of Vianet Group plc.
(b) In the previous five years he has held non-executive directorships with
Countrywide Assured plc, Focus Dynamics plc and FTV Group plc.
(c) From November 1990 to November 1993, he was a non-executive director of
Third Wave Network plc, to which an administrative receiver was appointed
in August 1994.
There are no other details requiring disclosure under paragraphs 6.F.2(b) to (g)
of the Listing Rules.
Notes to Editors:
After graduating from Cambridge University with a law degree, John May, 48,
joined Hambros Bank in 1977 and worked until 1986 in its corporate finance
departments in London and Sydney.
From 1986 to 1994, he was an executive director, then joint managing director,
of Hambro Countrywide plc, which he helped transform from an estate agency chain
into a broader financial services group through the establishment of its
mortgage and general insurance business and the launch in 1988 of Hambro Assured
plc, then the UK's largest life insurance start-up. From 1994 to 1998, he was
an executive director of Hambros Bank Limited and also managing director of
Hambro Group Investments (UK) Limited, the direct investment vehicle of the
Hambros group, where he was responsible for cultivating and implementing the
strategy for a portfolio of private equity investments with a combined value of
some £150m until the takeover of Hambros plc by Investec plc.
In 1999, Mr May founded his own private equity investment and consultancy
business which has, with co-investors, invested in a number of small to medium
size businesses in a variety of sectors and stages of development.
