1999 Results
The principal negative factors underlying the disappointing results for 1999
were the adverse effect of drought on the Group's tea production, low tea and
coffee prices, reduced engineering profits and the impact of restructuring
costs incurred by Siegfried AG in the USA. Improved profits were achieved
from cold storage, distribution and food trading; by the Group's extensive
citrus and wine grape operations in Australia; from property leasing and fine
art trading, and by Duncan Lawrie Ltd.
Prospects for 2000
In the UK, Duncan Lawrie has made a good start, and Linton Park is
experiencing some increase in activity compared with last year. Linton's
major associate, Siegfried AG, has stated that it has good prospects to
benefit from growth this year.
While there can be no guarantees, I believe that a recurrence of last year's
punishing climatic conditions as affecting all our principal tea growing areas
may reasonably be regarded as unlikely. Weather reports from the tea
districts in North India and Bangladesh have been satisfactory, and Malawi has
recovered from the effects of very dry conditions at the end of 1999. In
Kenya, however, our Nandi Hills tea estates suffered unprecedented frost in
January, coupled with a subsequent rainfall shortage, and their production has
been severely affected. Except for a modest improvement in the Mombasa tea
market, tea prices so far this year have been depressed, especially in
Bangladesh, and coffee prices have also been very low. The Group's
profitability in 2000 will be significantly influenced by the behaviour of
these markets during the remainder of the year.
Notes:
1. The directors have decided to recommend a final dividend of 61p per
ordinary share payable on 5th July 2000 to shareholders registered at the
close of business on 9th June 2000.

47p per ordinary share paid in the previous year.
2. Earnings per share have been calculated by dividing profit after tax and
minority interest of £5,710,000 (1998 - £15,200,000) by the weighted
average number of shares in issue at 31st December 1999 of 2,836,188 (1998
- 2,837,511).
3. The annual General Meeting is to be held on Thursday, 29th June 2000.
4. The above figures are an abridged statement from the Group's accounts for
the year ended 31st December 1999. The audit report on these accounts was
unqualified.
