Carillion to build and finance a £144 million hospital expansion in OntarioCanada

Leading support services and construction company, Carillion, has been selected to build and finance a major £145 million ($258.5 million CAD) expansion of the Royal Victoria Hospital in BarrieOntario, which will nearly double the size of the existing hospital.

The project in Barrie, a city 45 minutes outside Toronto, will add more than 400,000 square feet of new space, including the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre, to provide specialist services to Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with the Royal Victoria Hospital to develop the facility, which will remain publicly owned, controlled and accountable.

Carillion is one of the leading providers of privately financed healthcare facilities in Canada. In addition to the Barrie project, Carillion has successfully delivered two major Public Private Partnership hospitals - the New William Osler Hospital in Toronto and the Royal Ottawa Hospital - and is currently building a third, the Sault Area Hospital,

The latest project has been won following Carillion's acquisition of the Vanbots Group, a well established construction management services group in Canada, in October last year. The Vanbots acquisition significantly enhanced Carillion's ability to provide fully integrated solutions, especially for PPP projects, and further strengthened Carillion's leadership in the health sector in Canada.

John McDonough, chief executive of Carillion, says 'Carillion has enjoyed considerable success in the UK health sector and now we are building an impressive portfolio in the healthcare market in Canada. Our latest contract will transform the services the Royal Victoria Hospital can offer to the people of Barrie and we are delighted to have been chosen for this important project.'

Financing for the expansion is being arranged by Norddeutsche Landesbank Gironzentrale, National Australia Bank Limited, National Bank of Canada Inc, CIT Financial Ltd, Banco Espirito Santo de Investimento SA, Toronto Dominion Bank and Bank of Montreal.

Now that financial close has been achieved, construction work will begin shortly. Construction of the new addition and cancer centre is expected to be completed in the Autumn of 2011, with the significant renovations to the existing hospital completed by Spring 2013.
