Carillion makes flying start to 2003 with contracts and preferred supplier
status on over £700 million of work



Business and construction services company Carillion has made a flying start to
2003 with Carillion Building securing six contracts and achieving preferred
supplier status on another 10 contracts worth over £350 million in the first ten
weeks of the year. This is in addition to three highways contracts secured by
Carillion worth a total of £350 million including a maintenance contract in Area
12 and an upgrade to a three-lane motorway of the A74 dual carriageway between
Carlisle and Guardsmill.  Carillion is also the preferred bidder for a new
highway maintenance contract for Surrey County Council worth more than £150
million over a ten-year period.



Carillion Building has already started work on six projects in the retail,
residential, office and leisure sectors. They include three retail projects with
a combined value of some £35 million, including two for Asda Stores in Stevenage
and Oldbury in the West Midlands and the construction of retail and cinema units
in Fareham.



In the residential, office and leisure sectors, Carillion is involved with the
regeneration of the Paddington Basin where it has a contract to build over 200
apartments, an office fit-out in Bracknell and the construction of a four-storey
hotel at Chester Racecourse, with a total value of £47 million.



Carillion Building has also achieved preferred bidder status for 10 projects in
the health, residential, education, retail and office sectors with a total worth
over £300 million.



In the residential sector, preferred supplier positions have been secured on an
apartment block in Manchester, a luxury development in Battersea, a project in
East London as well as a three-block development in Salford Quays, with a
combined value of £147 million.



In the health, office, leisure and education sectors, projects totalling £170
million include an Diagnostic & Treatment Centre adjacent to Carillon's recently
completed Swindon Hospital project, offices for L&A / ING Bank in Manchester, a
football stadium at Anfield for Liverpool FC, a special needs school at Harrow
School and the construction of a supermarket for Morrisons in Wetherby.



In a 60:40 joint venture partnership with WSP, Carillion has been awarded the
Area 12 highway maintenance contract, with a total worth of up to £230 million -
the second new MAC contract to be awarded to Carillion. This five-year Managing
Agent Contractor contract (MAC), which is extendable to seven years, covers some
750 km of motorways and trunk roads in West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, East
Riding of Yorkshire and Derbyshire.



The nine kilometre stretch of the A74, worth £65 million, is the missing link in
the M6 route between England and Scotland carrying 42,000 vehicles a day, which
amounts to around three quarters of all cross border traffic, including some
10,000 heavy goods vehicles.



For the Surrey County Council maintenance contract, Carillion will cover the
boroughs of Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead, and Mole Valley
and Tandridge districts.
The contract, which is due to start at the end of April, will be for an initial
period of four years but could be extended to ten years, subject to performance.
