Carillion wins its first £90 million contract for £2 billion King's Cross
regeneration scheme
Support services and construction company Carillion has been awarded a £90
million contract from developers Argent and landowners London & Continental
Railways and DHL-Exel for the construction of two office blocks. This is
Carillion's first contract for the 15-20 year King's Cross regeneration scheme
in London, for which Carillion is one of three key suppliers.
King's Cross is one of the most significant development and regeneration
opportunities in Europe and will see the currently dilapidated area experiencing
a massive rebirth. It will include a new school, health centre, student
accommodation, office and residential buildings, including both new build
elements and refurbishments to existing buildings. The scheme, along with the
recent restoration of St Pancras International station, will transform King's
Cross into a modern, vital link to the rest of Europe.
The first contract comprises the construction of 450,000 sq ft of office space
and terms have been agreed for pre-letting some 250,000 sq ft to Sainsbury's.
Work is due to start on site in November 2008 and is scheduled for completion
within two years ready for occupation in 2011.
Carillion's chief executive John McDonough said: 'We are extremely pleased to be
working with Argent on this huge redevelopment of a vital part of London. We've
had a strong relationship with Argent for 25 years during which we have
delivered projects worth over £170 million for them, the most recent being the
regeneration of Piccadilly Place in Manchester.'
Tony Giddings, construction director at Argent, said: 'Together with HBG and
Kier, Carillion will work with us to bring new life right to the heart of the
first phase of development. We are really pleased that they are part of the
King's Cross team as we get ready to start delivering on site, and with
Sainsbury's occupying the buildings that Carillion will be working on - this is
a fantastic start for us.'
