Carillion awarded contract for new Scottish prison worth around £116 million

Leading support services and construction company, Carillion, has been awarded a contract by the Scottish Prison Service to design and construct the new HMP Low Moss, worth in the region of £116 million.

The project involves the design and construction of a 700 cell prison located near Bishopbriggs in East Dunbartonshire for which preliminary works are due to start later this year following completion of the planning process with East Dunbartonshire Council. The prison is expected to open in 2012.

The project will include the provision of the prison house blocks, which will be designed to achieve an excellent BREEAM rating, office accommodation, staff and visitor facilities, health centre, education and training facilities, multi-faith centre, laundry, kitchen and industrial workshops.

This contract award follows Carillion's success in delivering the enabling works contract for the new prison that involved demolishing the existing prison on the site. Under that contract, Carillion exceeded demanding waste minimisation targetby recycling and re-using 99.5 per cent of waste and sending only half of one per cent to landfill, demonstrating its sector leadership in sustainable development.

Commenting, Carillion Chief Executive, John McDonough, said: 'We are delighted that the Scottish Prison Service has awarded this contract to Carillion and we look forward to working with the SPS, with whom we have built a strong long-term relationship, to deliver this new facility. Prisons and other secure establishments represent a key market for Carillion and this latest success further enhances our position as a leader in this sector.'

This latest contract brings the value of work recently awarded to Carillion by the SPS to over £250 million.

Carillion's recent contracts for the Scottish Prison Service include the £60 million redevelopment at HMP Edinburgh, completed earlier this year, the £50 million redevelopment at HMYOI Polmont, due for completion in January 2010, and a £38 million contract for HMP Shotts that will begin in July 2009.
