Carillion confirmed as preferred bidder for the £450 million redevelopment of Southmead Hospital, a Public Private Partnership project.

Following Carillion's announcement oMarch regarding the development of a new hospital in Southmead, Bristolfor which planning consent has now been granted, Carillion has been confirmed as the preferred bidder for the project by North Bristol NHS Trust.

Carillion, in a 50-50 joint venture with Bank of Scotland Corporate (part of the Lloyds Banking Group), will finance the new landmark 800-bed acute hospital, for which Carillion will also provide design, construction, maintenance and facilities management services.

Carillion expects to invest up to £50 million of equity in the project and carry out the construction work to a value of approximately £430 million, plus £20million advance works. Carillion also expects to provide facilities management and lifecycle maintenance services worth some £170m over the 30-year concession period.

Carillion's credentials as a leader in Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects and also in delivering sustainable solutions were key to its success in securing this prestigious project. The state-of-the-art building will be the most sustainable major acute hospital in the UK with low energy utilisation and a carbon footprint below the government target of 3.43Te CO2 a year.

Carillion chief executive John McDonough said: "Carillion has delivered over 50 PPP projects in the UK and Canadaincluding 18 hospitals and other healthcare facilities.  We are delighted to have been selected as the preferred bidder for the North Bristol project, which will be our largest PPP hospital to date. We are deploying the Group's wide range of in-house skills and resources to generate a truly integrated solution. We look forward to working with the North Bristol NHS Trust to create a hospital that will not only enable the Trust to deliver first class health care services to the region, but will also achieve the highest standards of sustainability."

The new hospital, which also includes an integrated 28-bed community hospital, will concentrate acute services currently provided at Southmead and Frenchay hospitals on to a single site at Southmead in North Bristol

Advanced construction work started in August this year, with the hospital due to open in early 2014. Carillion will also provide a fully landscaped site after removing the existing outdated buildings.
