Carillion wins £100 million contract for Leeds schools
Support services and construction company Carillion has secured a £100 million
contract to build six new schools in Leeds.
Carillion will provide design and construction services to the Investors in the
Community Consortium (IIC), which has reached financial close on this PFI
project for Leeds City Council.
The project involves the construction of five new secondary schools and one
primary school on five separate sites, all of which will open over the next two
years.
The project will benefit more than 5,800 young people and provide them and the
wider community with state-of-the-art facilities. Additional facilities include
sports pitches, extensive landscaping and a hydrotherapy pool.
Carillion chief executive John McDonough said: 'Education is a key growth sector
for Carillion. Therefore, we are delighted to have secured this contract and
look forward to providing the new facilities, which will create first class
accommodation for full-time educational needs and community learning in Leeds.'
Simon Phillips, director, Investors in the Community said: 'Through having a
hand-picked team and total commitment from all parties we've been able to fast
track the first stages of this project, achieving financial close within 12
weeks of IIC being selected as preferred bidder. We look forward to working with
Carillion and our other partners for equally successful delivery at every future
stage of the project.'
Councillor Richard Harker, Leeds City Council, executive board member with
responsibility for education said: 'To reach this milestone in this time is a
significant achievement for everyone involved in this project and is testament
to their experience and professionalism. Our young people deserve the very best
and these new schools will provide state-of-the-art facilities for learning, and
inspiring environments for our talented teaching staff. I look forward to seeing
these exciting new buildings over the next two years.'
