Britain's latest PPP hospital opens its doors
Britain's latest privately finance hospital, the £132 million Great Western
Hospital in Swindon, opens its doors to the public today.
The 550 bed hospital was completed on time and on budget by construction and
business services group Carillion, who will also be responsible for maintaining
the facility over the next 27 years.
Carillion, together with United Medical Enterprises and Barclays Capital, form
The Hospital Company partnership which has developed the PPP hospital on behalf
of Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust.
The new Great Western Hospital, which replaces the ageing Princess Margaret
Hospital, opened its doors to accident and emergency patients this morning and
patients from the Princes Margaret will transfer to the new building over the
next seven days.
Carillion claims the Great Western Hospital is also the 'most sustainable
hospital' in the UK as it contains many features to reduce its environmental
impact in the local area and significantly reduce the amount of energy and water
used to run the buildings.
Many environmental features were built into the construction programme, not
least in the careful choice of materials and the introduction of new methods of
working that have resulted is massive reductions in the amount of waste.
The Great Western Hospital is one of 16 PPP projects that Carillion has won,
five in the health sector, and the company is currently shortlisted for a
further 16 projects with a capital investment, maintenance and facilities
management services value of some £3.8 billion.
