Celtic PLC
25 September 2003
Celtic plc is pleased to announce the appointment of Scottish businessman Peter
Lawwell to the post of Executive Director, Head of Operations in succession to
former chief executive Ian McLeod.
Mr Lawwell (44) will take up his position by 1st November 2003 and will take
overall charge of all operations of a non-footballing nature. The Company's
financial director, Eric Riley, who had assumed temporary responsibility for
these functions, will revert to his normal duties when Mr Lawwell takes up his
post.
A lifelong Celtic supporter, Mr Lawwell is currently Commercial Director of
Clydeport Limited (previously Clydeport plc).
Celtic Chairman Brian Quinn said:
'We made it clear when we started this process that we would take our time to
ensure we got the right person. As you would expect, the standard of applicant
for this crucial position was excellent and those we interviewed were of the
highest calibre, therefore we are delighted to have secured someone of Peter's
proven ability.
'His business pedigree, coupled with his vision for the club and obvious passion
for Celtic made him the outstanding candidate. His role reflects the fact that
football companies are different from most in that almost everything depends
upon footballing success. Therefore, Peter will be responsible for overseeing
all operations of a non-footballing nature to ensure that the highest levels of
infrastructure and support are available to the manager.'
Mr Lawwell, who is married with three children and lives in Glasgow, will assume
overall control of the financial, commercial and administrative functions at
Celtic Park when he takes up his position in the very near future, as soon as
his release from Clydeport can be secured.
Mr Lawwell commented: 'This is a job I have coveted for many years and I can't
wait to get started. Celtic is a unique organisation, from its unrivalled fan
base and its sporting traditions to its footballing and commercial potential.
From my previous time at Celtic, I have a true appreciation of the demands which
will be placed upon me in my new role, and I'm relishing the opportunity. '
Mr Lawwell was a director of Monktonhall Colliery Limited in the 12 months prior
to its voluntary liquidation in April 1997. There are no further details to be
disclosed under paragraphs 6F2 (b) to (g) of the Listing Rules relating to Mr
Lawwell's appointment.
