STATEMENT REGARDING FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT
Kenny Dalglish, Director of Football Operations comments, 'It is with regret
that I announce that John Barnes and Eric Black's contracts with Celtic
Football Club have been terminated with immediate effect. Furthermore and
following discussion between Celtic and Terry McDermott it is regretted that
Terry will be leaving Celtic by mutual agreement.
As an interim measure, I will be taking charge of the first team selection and
coaching duties.
I will also be working with Allan MacDonald and the Board as a matter of
priority to appoint a new Head Coach of the highest quality.
I believe there are many people who have to look in the mirror when a
situation such as this arises. I acknowledge my role and undoubtedly I will
be asking the players to look at their contribution to the current
circumstances and to find it within themselves to give the type of performance
and commitment which the Celtic support deserves.
I would like to thank John, Eric and Terry for their time at Celtic; this is
one of the hardest situations I have had to deal with in football, however, I
believe at this time this is in the best interests of Celtic Football Club and
that must be our number one concern.'
Allan MacDonald, Celtic's Chief Executive comments, 'The first team is the
mainstay of Celtic and the successful management by the Head Coach of first
team performance, selection, tactics and player acquisition clearly makes this
a key role in achieving the ambitions of Celtic. The club recognises that
constant changes in the Head Coach role are not conducive to long term
stability, however continuity of personnel must clearly be sought and achieved
within a context of football progress. It is with some personal regret on my
part that this situation has arisen, however this decision is in the best
interests of Celtic and that should be and must be the only consideration for
people making decisions at Celtic Park.
The club's approach to squad development and further player acquisition must
rest firmly on Celtic's strong footballing traditions and culture. The
company will be supporting Kenny Dalglish in the pursuit of a Head Coach with
the attitude, ability and experience to build and shape a successful first
team squad based on this tradition.'
