FORMER AUSTRALIAN AMBASSADOR TO EGYPT APPOINTED TO BOARD
Professor Bowker, 58, retired from the Australian Foreign Service in June 2008 after a 37 year career specialising in Middle Eastern issues. He was Australian Ambassador to Egypt from 2005 until 2008, and Ambassador to Jordan from 1989 to 1992. In addition to postings to Syria from 1979 to 1981 and Saudi Arabia from 1974 to 1976, Professor Bowker was accredited from Cairo as non-resident Ambassador to Libya, Sudan, Syria and Tunisia.
From 2001 to 2003, Professor Bowker was Deputy Director of Studies at the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies at the Australian Defence College, Canberra, while on secondment from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade ('DFAT').
In 2000, Professor Bowker led the preparation of a major submission by DFAT to the Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade ('JSCFADT') inquiry into Australia's relations with the Middle East. He also led the DFAT team at its two appearances before the JSCFADT inquiry.
Professor Bowker was also Director of External Relations and Public Information, and later Senior Adviser, Policy Research of the United Nations Relief and Works Program for Palestine Refugees in the Near East ('UNRWA') in Gaza and Jerusalem in 1997 to 1998.
Professor Bowker has a PhD from the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies, Australian National University 2001, a MA from the Centre for Middle East and Central Asian Studies, Australian National University 1995, a BA (Hons) Indonesian and Malayan Studies and Political Science, Melbourne University 1970 and completed an RAF Arabic course, Beaconsfield, UK 1988.
As Centamin moves the Sukari Project towards the production phase, Professor Bowker's experience and knowledge of North Africa and the Middle East will be invaluable to the Company.
Professor Bowker does not hold any ordinary shares in Centamin Egypt Limited. There is no other information to disclose under Schedule Two, paragraph (g) of the AIM Rules.
