SEA Wins €3.5million contract for EarthCARE Programme
Cohort, the independent technology group, today announces that its wholly-owned subsidiary SEA has been selected by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) to provide an Instrument Control Unit (ICU) for the European Space Agency's EarthCARE mission, a contract valued at circa €3.5 million.
Under this contract, SEA will work alongside the prime, SSTL, to develop and produce the ICU for the Multi-Spectral Imager instrument on board the EarthCARE satellite, a €263 million joint Japanese-European project, which will be used to gain a better understanding of the interactions between cloud, radioactive and aerosol processes that play a role in climate regulation.
The Multi-Spectral Imager, which will collect images of the earth to support the measurement of cloud and aerosol properties, will rely on the ICU to collect scientific data and provide ground status commands whilst in flight.
SSTL is part of EADS Astrium the prime contractor for the EarthCARE satellite development. SEA is optimistic of further collaboration opportunities ahead of the satellite launch in 2013.
Commenting on the contract, Andrew Thomis, Chief Executive of Cohort plc, said:
"We are delighted to have secured this significant contract which is testament to the quality of our technology and capabilities. We continue to grow in the space market and look forward to further building our relationship with both SSTL and Astrium."
