THE CARPHONE WAREHOUSE GROUP PLC
MAKES BELGIAN ACQUISITION
The Carphone Warehouse Group PLC today announces the
acquisition of eight stores through the purchase of the
entire issued share capital of Belgian mobile phone retailer
Time and Light SA (TNL) for a total of BEF 94,000,000
(approximately £1.4m in cash). The purchase is being made
through The Phone House SA, the Group's European subsidiary
in Belgium.
The Group currently has 34 stores in Belgium and the
purchase will take the portfolio to a total of 42. The new
stores are located in the prominent 'Cora' shopping centres
in cities across the country. The Group considers this
acquisition to be an important addition to its Belgian
portfolio due to the prime locations of the stores. Each
will be re-branded The Phone House within six weeks.
David Ross, Chief Operating Officer, The Carphone Warehouse
Group PLC said:
'The acquisition confirms our position as market leader in
Belgium. The purchase is important to our expansion, as Cora
shopping centres have previously refused new telecoms
entrants. Through the TNL stores we are further
strengthening our position and now have a prominent presence
all over Belgium, in both high streets and shopping centres.
'The last month has clearly demonstrated our expansion plans
are right on track, we now have 1000 stores in 14 countries
all over Europe. The Belgian acquisition complements our
recent purchase of stores in France, Portugal, The
Netherlands, Poland and Holland and together they represent
another significant development in our European growth
strategy.'
