Board Changes
HEMSLEY CHOSEN TO SUCCEED AT DOMINO'S PIZZA
The Board of Domino's Pizza UK & Irl plc ('Domino's') is
pleased to announce that Stephen Hemsley, Finance
Director, will succeed Gerald Halpern as Chief Executive
with effect from 1 January 2001.
Mr Halpern will retire at the end of this year as stated
in the Company's prospectus issued at the time of its
flotation on the Alternative Investment Market in November
1999 and will provide consultancy to the business until
the end of 2002.
Mr Halpern is widely credited with establishing Domino's
as the UK's leading pizza delivery company, and creating
the largest market for Domino's in Europe. In 1994, when
Gerald and his brother Colin acquired the master
franchise to own, operate and franchise Domino's Pizza
stores in the UK and Republic of Ireland, the brand was
struggling to expand under the management of its US based
owners.
Under the Halperns management, Domino's has grown at a
faster rate than at any time since its UK launch in 1985,
with system sales and market share more than doubling
over the past four years, brand awareness reaching over
80%, and the number of stores increasing from 77 in 1993
to 210 today.
Mr Hemsley (43) was appointed Finance Director of
Domino's Pizza in April 1998. In November 1999, he lead
the successful flotation of Domino's on AIM, raising £3
million to aid further expansion.
Commenting on the announcement, Gerald Halpern said:
'Stephen is a trusted and experienced successor who has a
passion for the pizza delivery business. He will ensure
that the business remains focused on growth and improved
profitability whilst providing our franchisees and staff
with excellent leadership.'
'I am very pleased and honoured to have been selected as
the next Chief Executive of Domino's Pizza,' said Mr
Hemsley. 'Gerry is a very tough act to follow and I am
committed to continuing the pattern of growth and success
that he established for the company in the UK and
Ireland.'
Worldwide there is a network of over 6,600 corporate and
franchise Domino's pizza stores in 65 international
markets around the world.
