easyJet confirms CFM as preferred engine supplier for Airbus A319 fleet
easyJet plc (LON:EZL), Europe's leading low-cost airline, has selected CFM56-5
engines to power its fleet of Airbus A319 aircraft.
The agreement in principle is subject to the successful conclusion of the
contract for 120 Airbus A319 aircraft, and options with price protection on a
further 120 A319s. The selection of the Airbus was announced on 14th October and
easyJet expects, subject to shareholder approval, to conclude the transaction in
the New Year.
The detailed terms are subject to confidentiality restrictions.
Ray Webster, easyJet Chief Executive, said:
'This announcement is the result of a very close competition between CFM
International and IAE both of whom were focussed intently on trying to secure
the deal. Both companies tabled very attractive offers and after an intensive
review of all aspects of the proposal we were able to reach a clear decision.'
Notes
easyJet's firm order stream for Airbus A319s is expected to run from 2003 -
2007 with the first A319 being delivered to easyJet in the second half of the
2003 calendar year. Options with price protection on a further 120 A319s run
through to 2012.
CFM56-5 engines are produced by CFM International (CFM), a 50/50 joint company
between Snecma Moteurs of France and the General Electric Company. With more
than 13,000 engines in service, CFM is the world's leading aircraft engine
supplier.
