ELEMENTIS plc APPOINTS NEW GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Elementis plc is pleased to announce the appointment of Geoffrey Gaywood to the
Board as Group Chief Executive with effect from 1 October 2001.

Mr Gaywood joins Elementis from Ernst & Young LLP where he was a director of
chemicals based in the UK.  Previously, he was with International Specialty
Products Inc, a US based specialty chemicals company, where he ran the European
division and was also general manager of its global acetylenics business.

Prior to joining ISP, he worked for over twenty years in the Dow Chemical
Company in a number of general management roles in Europe, South Africa and
Japan.

Aged 58, Geoff Gaywood was born and educated in England and holds a degree in
chemical engineering from London University.

Also from 1 October 2001, Jonathan Fry, Chairman, will revert to a non-
executive role.

Commenting on the appointment, Jonathan Fry said, 'Geoff has wide experience of
the chemical industry internationally.  I am confident Elementis will benefit
substantially from his leadership skills over the coming years.'
