ELEMENTIS plc
CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT AT TODAY'S ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Commenting on current trading at today's Annual General Meeting,
Jonathan Fry, Chairman of Elementis plc said:
'Elementis has seen an encouraging start to 2000 with sales for the
first quarter up 8 per cent year on year and operating profit before
goodwill and exceptionals up by a commensurate amount. Chromium
continues to benefit from the introduction of our chromic acid
product, CA21, into the metal finishing market, although trading
conditions in leather tanning and metal alloys for aerospace markets
remain difficult. There are signs that a number of Asian economies
are improving, particularly benefiting Pigments & Specialties. The
continuing weakness of the euro however remains a concern. The Group-
wide focus on business re-engineering should increasingly be reflected
in enhanced performance as the year progresses.'
