Illegal strike action at Fresnillo and Ciénega mines
Fresnillo plc, the world's largest primary silver producer, announces that the Mexican authorities have arrested two union leaders from Mexico's Mining and Metal Workers Union. In response, the mining union has called for an illegal stoppage of work at all mines in Mexico staffed by union workers. Last night, union workers at the Fresnillo and Ciénega mines illegally stopped work and as of today neither mine is operating.
Jaime Lomelín, Chief Executive Officer, said:
'We trust that the Mexican authorities will act swiftly to reverse this illegal action and ensure that its dispute with the union is successfully resolved without further disruption to the lawful conduct of our mining operations.'
Fresnillo plc will keep the market informed of developments as they occur.
