GALLIFORD TRY PLC
Construction and Housebuilding Group
AGM Statement
Addressing shareholders at the Annual General Meeting of Galliford Try the
Chairman, Tony Palmer, made the following statement:
I was delighted to be able to report in August that we had made excellent
progress during the financial year, raising Galliford's profits by 33% and we
announced the merger of Galliford with Try Group to create a major
construction and housebuilding group named Galliford Try plc.
The businesses have been operating together for a month and we have no doubt
that the strategy was the right one. The quality and depth of resources and
the financial strength we now have puts us into a new league for meeting the
opportunities that will undoubtedly arise in both the short and the longer
term. Our ability to offer partnership based construction on a national basis
has been welcomed by clients and our expertise in brownfield development and
conversions in our regional housebuilding brands has given us a clear market
niche. Our management team is confident we will achieve significant synergies
through the combination of the two businesses and that we are on course to
achieve the objectives that we set for the merger.
The construction market remains active and we have successfully maintained
both the size and quality of our order book. The combined group has
particular sector strengths in growth areas such as telecommunications, water
and social housing and a broader range of services offered, encompassing fit
out and maintenance. Our increased size also means that our clients will
consider us for more substantial projects or series of projects, and we are
encouraged by the number of opportunities that our partnership approach is
generating from existing and potential new clients. The excellent
relationships we maintain with our supply chain are helping the management of
our sub contractor and supplier base as the pressure on resources in the
industry increases.
Our housebuilding strategy is clear. We concentrate on more bespoke
developments, out of direct competition with the volume housebuilders, and aim
to develop distinct regional brands that now cover the south-east, south-west
and eastern counties markets. Our greater geographic spread has lessened our
dependence on any specific market and although the housing market has lost the
buoyancy of the early part of the year, affordability and the general economic
conditions remain strong, enabling us to plan for the future with confidence.
In conclusion, the merger has created a greatly strengthened group with the
ability to grow in its existing markets and with the critical mass to take on
new opportunities as they arise. Our new management team is settling in well
to its new responsibilities and I am delighted that they are working so well
together. We look forward with confidence.
