TELME GROUP PLC ('TelMe')
TelMe Announces Investment in Voice Activated Venture with PostcodeID
TelMe announces that it has made a strategic investment in PostcodeID Limited, a
joint venture with the shareholders of ICR Group Limited, a provider of business
solutions for the customer service market, based in West Yorkshire.
TelMe has acquired an initial 25% stake by the exercise of an option under an
agreement entered into in June 2001. TelMe will also take an option over the
shares of the other shareholders. Under the terms of the option agreement TelMe
has paid £25,000 for the 25% shareholding and will make its technology, data and
commercial resource available to PostcodeID.
Paul Chapman, co-founder of TelMe's core business, GB Information Management,
and holder of 8% of the shares of TelMe is to transfer and take up an Executive
Directorship with PostcodeID. Mr Chapman will also subscribe for 6% of the
PostcodeID shares.
PostcodeID has developed a voice recognition system which integrates with
TelMe's National Register Database of 44 million individuals to create an
automated system for capturing and confirming voice transmitted data. The first
application using the system to register and confirm a caller automatically
using just the postcode and the person's name has undergone a successful
commercial trial with ntl:
Other commercial initiatives, including the use of the system by utilities,
motor manufacturers, travel companies and financial services organisations are
currently being negotiated by PostcodeID.
Commenting on the transaction, Chief Executive of TelMe, Richard Law said:
'The investment in PostcodeID represents an exciting opportunity for TelMe to
benefit from the rapid expansion of the automated data capture market. TelMe
will benefit both from licensing revenue for every system sold and in terms of
added value to our investment in PostcodeID. The business has made huge
progress since it was set up last year and, with the development of working
products and the successful ntl: trials, the potential value of the investment
has increased significantly. I am particularly pleased that Paul Chapman has
agreed to take up a Directorship in the new venture. His experience as the
co-founder of GB Information Management and Alterian plc will be a great asset
to the new venture moving forward.'
Managing Director and Chairman of PostcodeID, Jonathan Smith, said:
'This joint venture formally brings together the information management skills
of TelMe with the voice recognition and telephony expertise of ICR. The
completion of a very successful commercial trial with such a high profile
telephony services company as ntl: has validated the efficiencies that the
service can bring to all businesses. PostcodeID represents a leading edge fully
automated and innovative approach to increasing efficiency within the customer
contact sector. Paul Chapman has collaborated with the development of the
PostcodeID system and I welcome his dedicated involvement with the Company.'
