2014 Sustainability Report Published
Today, Glencore published its 2014 Sustainability Report (http://www.glencore.com/sustainability/sustainability-publications/). The report is available as both a full report, providing detailed content on our performance during the year and our approach to sustainability, and as a highlights booklet, which provides a succinct overview of our progress during 2014.
Our 2014 Sustainability Report focuses on the areas of sustainability that have been assessed to be material to the Group:
· Safety remains our top priority: our immediate goal is to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries at all of our operations. It is with deep sadness that we report the death of 16 employee and contractors at our operations in 2014. While we recognise that any fatality is unacceptable, we are encouraged that we have achieved a 40% reduction in the number of fatalities compared to 2013, and a 42% reduction in our lost-time injury frequency rate. We are determined to eliminate loss of life completely from our business.
· Engaging with our communities: our business generates significant socio-economic benefits for the countries in which we operate and for the communities living near to our assets. During the year, we continued to progress our commitment to deliver positive benefits to our local communities. We invested around $114 million in initiatives delivering programmes designed to meet fundamental needs, such as education, health and infrastructure. In 2014, we launched a project to better understand and manage our total contribution to social value through employment, procurement, investment in infrastructure and other activities.
· Protecting human rights: Respect for human rights is core to our how we do business and we are committed to operating workplaces that are free of discrimination and harassment. We work with our host communities to improve their knowledge and understanding of human rights. In 2013, we aligned our security management practices with the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. We strengthened our processes further in 2014 with the publication of detailed guidance on the Voluntary Principles and implemented the Voluntary Principles in our four operating countries that we consider to be most at risk. We are proud that during the year Glencore achieved membership of the Voluntary Principles Initiative, a forum that brings together representatives from extractive companies, governments and civil society to specifically address security-related human rights risks.
· Managing environmental impacts: we are aware that our global operations can have both a direct and indirect impact on the environment. All our operations monitor their environmental performance, and make continuous efforts to avoid or minimise any impact. All of our sites work hard to improve operational efficiencies through reducing energy consumption and implementing measures to mitigate our direct greenhouse gas emissions.
Commenting on the report, Ivan Glasenberg, Chief Executive Officer, said 'We take our responsibilities to our people, to society and to the environment very seriously; these responsibilities are core to our approach to doing business. Our 2014 sustainability report demonstrates the progress we have made in developing and rolling out an enhanced sustainability strategy that is integrated with our business ambitions and reflects our commitment to value creation. We are pleased that this progress has been recognised by Glencore gaining membership during 2014 of the International Council of Minerals and Metals, the United Nations Global Compact and the Voluntary Principles Initiative.'
