Good Energy comments on Government onshore wind farm announcement
Good Energy Group plc ("Good Energy" or the "Company"), owner of Good Energy Limited, the 100% renewable electricity company, has today commented on the Government's decision to maintain support rates for onshore wind farms under the Renewables Obligation scheme. The announcement was made on Thursday 6th June as part of a package of proposals on community engagement related to wind farms.
Following a Call for Evidence published last year, the Department of Energy & Climate Change concluded that there is insufficient evidence to trigger an early review of onshore wind financial support levels under the Renewables Obligation. It confirmed that support will be maintained at the level announced in December 2012 of 0.9 ROC per MWh of electricity generated.
Commenting, Juliet Davenport OBE, CEO and founder of Good Energy, said:
"It's clear that the UK Government remains as committed as ever to onshore wind technology being at the forefront of its plans to encourage investment in the UK energy market.
"This week's announcement shows yet again how that commitment is underpinned by an independent, evidence-based process that determines financial support levels for renewable technologies.
"The UK has a strong track record in that respect, and it's good to see that it has been maintained. It sends the signal loud and clear that the UK is a good place to do good business when it comes to renewables."
The announcement also confirmed that the Government would revise existing planning guidance, introduce new obligations on developers to engage with communities.
Juliet Davenport continues:
"The fact is that many of the best developers are already doing what the Government is now asking them to do. Indeed companies like Good Energy are already ahead of the curve when it comes to good quality community engagement and support, through things like our local electricity tariff and our comprehensive approach ensuring that our sites act as a vehicle for community investment. The Government's announcement is a welcome one in that respect."
