GREGGS plc
CHAIRMAN'S A.G.M. STATEMENT
Greggs plc is the UK's leading retailer specialising in sandwiches, savouries
and other bakery products, with a particular focus on takeaway food and
catering. It has over 1,200 retail outlets throughout the UK, trading
principally under the Greggs and Bakers Oven brands.
At the Annual General Meeting held in Newcastle upon Tyne today, the Chairman
Derek Netherton said:
"The Group's results in the year to date are in line with our budgets, and ahead
of the comparable period last year. Like-for-like sales in the first 19 weeks
are up 4.3%, comprising the already reported increase of 5.2% in the first nine
weeks, and slower growth of 3.7% in weeks 10-19. Overall sales for the year to
date are up 9.6%.
So far this year we have opened 28 shops and closed 22, including a number of
underperforming Bakers Oven units in Scotland. This gives us a current total of
1,208 shops, and we are on track to add a net 45 shops during the year. The
sales in our two shops in Belgium are growing steadily, after a slow start.
As anticipated, we are bearing significant cost increases, including higher
insurance premiums and the rises in shop wage costs and National Insurance
premiums which took effect from 1 April. Despite these pressures, we look
forward to reporting satisfactory progress when we announce our interim results
in August."
