APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN DESIGNATE
Greggs is the UK's leading retailer specialising in sandwiches, savouries and
other bakery products, with a particular focus on takeaway food and catering.
It has over 1,100 retail outlets throughout the UK, trading primarily under the
Greggs and Bakers Oven brands.
Derek Netherton FIA has been appointed Chairman Designate of Greggs plc, and
will join the Board as a non-executive Director with effect from 1 March 2002.
He is expected to take over the role of Chairman in about 12 months' time when
Ian Gregg retires. The position is part-time and non-executive.
Derek Netherton, who is 57, spent his career in investment banking and retired
in 1996 as joint head of corporate finance at J Henry Schroder & Co. He is a
non-executive director of Next plc, Hiscox plc, St James's Place Capital plc,
Plantation & General Investments plc, Schroder Property Investment Management
Limited and Life Assurance Holding Corporation Limited.
Mike Darrington, Managing Director of Greggs since January 1984, said: 'I am
delighted that we have been able to identify such an able successor to Ian
Gregg. Since I joined Greggs in 1983 we have grown its sales from £37 million
to £339 million and its pre-tax profits from £1.7 million to £26.4 million. Our
aim is to achieve a turnover of £1 billion by 2010, and to win recognition as
Europe's finest bakery-related retailer, attaining world-class standards in
everything we do. I look forward to working with Derek to ensure that we
