First branded digital product introduced for in-game purchase
Guild Esports, a UK-based owner and developer of esports teams (LSE: GILD), is pleased to announce the release of its first Guild-branded digital product range for purchase by Rocket League gamers as an in-game customisation feature to enhance user experience.
The products are Guild branded Rocket League "decals", which enable players to personalise the skin of their in-game vehicles. For example, players will be able to purchase a Guild logo to affix to their car while competing in matches. In many top-tier esports titles, team-specific decals, skins and other in-game digital items have become common. Fans and other players can purchase these skins to demonstrate their support of an esports team organisation.
The decals will be available from today to purchase in-game via Rocket League's Esports Shop, an in-game marketplace where exclusive RLCS (Rocket League Championship Series) themed items are listed for purchase.
Direct-to-consumer sales of in-game items are an increasingly important revenue stream in the esports industry and are expected to be the fastest growing esports revenue segment, forecast to increase from $7.1 million in 2020 to $17.2 million by 2023, a 60.9% year-on-year increase (Source: Newzoo).
The debut Guild decal range comprises two products, Octane and Dominus priced at 300 Rocket League Credits (£2.46) per decal. Guild will share revenue for each purchase with Epic Games owned Psyonix, the US-based developer of Rocket League.
The launch comes five months after the creation of Guild's professional Rocket League team and will address the game's large and growing audience. Rocket League, a fast-paced game that combines motor racing with soccer, reached 100 million total views on the video streaming service Twitch in February this year. Latest figures show professionally organised Rocket League competitions were the fourth most watched on Twitch in October 2020 with a total of 7.6 million hours streamed.
Carleton Curtis, Executive Chairman, said: "The launch of our Rocket League decals is a further important step by Guild to broaden its revenue base and appeal to fans. Digital products are a popular and exciting part of the esports ecosystem that has the potential to become an important revenue driver in the long term. Our decals proudly sport Guild's logo and signature style, offering us a great way to connect with our fans."
The Company plans to introduce further digital product lines in due course.
