The Great Universal Stores PLC has received notifications of the following
purchases by directors of Ordinary shares of 25p each in the Company:

a)  On 6 December 1999, Mr P M Harris notified the Company that he had purchased
3,000 Ordinary shares on that day at a price of £3.60 per share.  Following this
purchase, Mr Harris now holds 16,000 shares in the Company.

b)  Mr P L Weigh has notified the Company that he has today purchased 2,000
Ordinary shares at a price of £3.6425 per share.  Following this purchase, Mr
Weigh now holds 3,000 shares in the Company.
