Directors' Notification of Dealing in Shares

The Great Universal Stores Plc has received notification today that Sir Victor
Blank (Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company) purchased 58,000
ordinary shares of 25p each in the Company at a price of £4.9225 per share on
1 September 2000.  Sir Victor has a beneficial interest in 55,000 of these
shares and a non-beneficial interest in the remaining 3,000 shares.

Following this purchase, Sir Victor now holds the following interests in the
ordinary shares of 25p each in the Company:

          Non-beneficial                  3,000
