                        STATEMENT RE: FINANCE DIVISION


The Great Universal Stores P.L.C. ('GUS') today announces that it has prepared
and issued a memorandum for the sale of the two main businesses in its Finance
Division, General Guarantee Finance and Highway Vehicle Management.  At 30
September 1999, the assets of these businesses amounted to £1.29 billion
before deducting £830 million of securitised debt.

The sale process will take some weeks and no further announcement is expected
before 8 June 2000 when GUS reports its preliminary results for the year to 31
March 2000.
