Holidaybreak acquires Hotelnet
Holidaybreak PLC, the UK's leading provider of specialist holidays, has
acquired the Internet hotel booking business, Hotelnet (hotelnet.co.uk)
through its subsidiary, Superbreak Mini-Holidays limited. The initial
consideration for Hotelnet is £1.3 million payable in cash on completion, with
a deferred consideration for three years of £500,000 payable in Holidaybreak
shares.
Founded in 1995 by Richard Knowles, Hotelnet has established itself as one of
the UK's leading Internet portals for hotel bookings with over 9,000 hotels
worldwide, including Superbreak's Hotel Breaks division. Many of the hotels
are bookable online and the site currently has 100,000 hits per day from 6,000
visitors.
Hotelnet is profitable, with revenue generated from a mix of commissions and
payment for listings from participating hotels and agents. Superbreak is
currently Hotelnet's main agent and under the terms of the acquisition the
business will be merged into the Superbreak division. As part of this
division, it will benefit from additional investment and access to the
existing infrastructure within the company. The investment will allow for
improved design, enhanced functionality and an expanded product offering.
Superbreak's own Internet booking system has been very successful since
www.superbreak.com began taking hotel bookings on-line in October 1999. On-
line bookings are increasing substantially month on month and at current
levels, will generate revenues of £2.5 million on an annualised basis.
Richard Knowles will join Superbreak where, with his Internet experience, he
will be responsible for further developing the e-commerce potential of the
website and ensuring that other businesses are able to interact with the site.
This is particularly important for links with the retail trade, either as
click through from their own sites or as an alternative for the current
Viewdata booking mechanism.
Commenting, Richard Knowles, said: 'We have worked closely with Superbreak
for a number of years and I am delighted that we have the opportunity to join
one of the UK's leading specialist holiday providers. The integration of our
business within the Superbreak division will enable the business to expand in
the most effective way possible.'
Richard Atkinson, Chief Executive of Holidaybreak PLC said: ' We are very
excited about the acquisition of Hotelnet. Strategically it is important for
us, particularly as we continue to witness rapid growth in the UK short break
market and increasing use of new technologies to purchase holidays and make
hotel bookings. Hotelnet fits perfectly within our Hotel Breaks division and
is already a profitable business with a well established portal and
substantial platform base. We believe that we can develop this business into
one of Europe's leading booking sites on the web.'
