The Board of UK COAL announces that Mr Brian Staples has informed the Company of
his intention to resign as a Non-Executive Director with effect from 31 December
2003 to pursue other interests.

Mr Staples joined the board in September 1999.

Commenting on Mr Staples resignation David Jones, Chairman of UK COAL PLC said:

'I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian for his service to the
Company and the Industry over the last four years and wish him well in the
future.'
