                               Board Appointment

The Henderson Smaller Companies Investment Trust plc announces the appointment
of James Jonathan Nelson as a non-executive director of the Company with effect
from 27 September 2002.

Mr Nelson, who is 55, retired as an executive partner of Graphite Capital in
June 2002. For most of his career he has been responsible for the management of
unquoted investments and he is a former Chairman of the British Venture Capital
Association. He is currently the Chairman of PRI Group plc and a director of
Intermediate Capital Group plc and of American Opportunity Trust plc.

Commenting on the appointment, Peter Cadbury, the Chairman of The Henderson
Smaller Companies Investment Trust plc, said: 'We are delighted that James
Nelson has a agreed to join our board. He brings deep experience of investments
and investment management which will be of immense value to the Trust'.
