HORNBY TO SPONSOR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL AND REVIVAL
Hornby PLC, ('Hornby') the models and collectibles group, has today announced
that it is sponsoring the Goodwood Motor Festival events in the Summer.
Horrnby's slot car racing systems brand, Scalextric will be a key sponsor of
both the three-day Festival of Speed in July and the three-day Revival Meeting
in September.
At the Festival of Speed, there will be a Scalextric enclosure featuring an
accurately modelled Scalextric version of the famous Goodwood Hillclimb that the
public will be able to race on. Racers will be challenged to set a fastest time,
pitting their driving skills against famous drivers from both the past and
present.
Scalextric is celebrating the occasion of the Goodwood Festivals with the launch
of limited edition special models of the Ford GT40s that finished first second
and third in the famous Le Mans 24-hour race in 1966. The models will be
finished in the original Le Mans liveries from 1966. Special boxed sets of the 3
cars will be produced in a limited edition of 10,000. They will be on sale at
the event at a price of £100. Boxes will be logo-ed with Goodwood Festival of
Speed and the Ford 100th Anniversary logos.
The link between Scalextric and Goodwood dates back to the company's origins in
the early 1950's. The original model cars and accessories were all based on
Goodwood buildings and landmarks. The ninth Duke of Richmond's passion for motor
racing included his very own giant Scalextric layout in Goodwood House.
Frank Martin, Chief Executive of Hornby commented,
' This is an important step in the marketing of our Scalextric brand. The
festivals are extremely popular events that receive huge attention from the
media and the public. To be part of the Goodwood festivals will place Scalextric
right at the heart of our target market. There is a growing enthusiasm for both
modern and historic motorsports, from which Scalextric is benefiting. Our wide
range of products has an enduring appeal, which we hope that visitors to the
Festivals will appreciate.
' Ford is the major sponsor of the Goodwood events and is celebrating its 100th
Anniversary. A major feature of the Festival of Speed will be the launch of the
limited edition Goodwood Festival Scalextric set including models of the three
famous GT40s that came first, second and third in the epic 1966 Le Mans race. We
expect these to be very popular with enthusiasts.'
' Both events are well and truly on the Motor Sport calendar and attract
thousands of visitors every day. The events have an amazing appeal. We expect
that the Scalextric enclosure will be buzzing with enthusiasts and potential
customers.
' One of the key attractions will be the Scalextric Hillclimb which the public
can enter. The Hill Climb will echo the real thing taking place just yards away.
