HSBC STATEMENT

HSBC confirms that Michael Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer of The
Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, will be leaving the HSBC
Group with effect from 15 June 2007. An announcement regarding his successor
will be made in due course.
