                     Non-Executive Director Board Changes                     


IMI plc, the major international engineering group, today announces the
appointment of Brian Staples to the Board as a Non-Executive Director with
effect from 1 May 2000.

Mr Staples, aged 54, is Chief Executive of Amey plc, the infrastructure
management and business process outsourcing group.  He was appointed Chief
Executive in November 1997.  Prior to this he was Chief Executive of United 
Utilities plc.  Mr Staples is also a Non-Executive Director of RJB Mining PLC.

IMI also announces that Kevin McDonald OBE will today be retiring from his
role as Non-Executive Director.
