Commanding Retail Presence Taken in Sydney

Inchcape PLC 15 November 1999 Inchcape Takes Commanding Retail Presence in Sydney Inchcape plc has acquired two separate dealer groups in Sydney. The acquisitions of the Denlo Group and Chatswood Classic Cars, together with earlier retail investments, give Inchcape a commanding position in automotive retailing in Sydney for three of the brands it imports into Australia - Volkswagen, Jaguar and Peugeot - and will provide direct access to around 10,000 new customers. The two businesses acquired have combined net assets of approximately £10 million. The Inchcape Group's total net assets in Sydney retail now stand at around £14 million. Inchcape accounts for 75% of Volkswagen and Jaguar sales and over 30% of Peugeot sales in the Sydney market, which represents some 40% of imported car sales in Australia. Peter Johnson, Inchcape Group Chief Executive, said: 'The investment is in line with Inchcape's strategy of integrating our automotive distribution businesses into retail in markets where we can develop a commanding retail presence. This not only brings us closer to the customer, but also improves asset utilisation and delivers operational efficiencies. In addition, the achievement of scale in retail allows for more cost effective customer marketing'.
