Inchcape sells Daihatsu UK
Inchcape plc, the international automotive services group, announced today
that it had agreed to sell Daihatsu (UK) Limited to International Motors
Limited for a consideration of around £9 million. Daihatsu (UK) is the sole
importer and distributor of Daihatsu passenger cars and commercial vehicles in
the UK. The impact of the disposal on the Inchcape Group is not material.
Commenting on the disposal, Inchcape Group Chief Executive Peter Johnson said:
'Inchcape's strategy is to focus on businesses in core markets where we can
generate sustainable, scale returns and develop a strong direct customer
relationship. As a niche import and distribution business, primarily
competing in the volume small car sector, Daihatsu (UK) does not fit with our
strategy going forward.'
Inchcape operates in more than 20 international markets, representing many of
the world's leading car manufacturers. The Group's activities include import
and distribution; retail of new and used cars; financial services, including
consumer and dealer finance, insurance and leasing; and e-commerce, through a
partnership with US-based Autobytel.com, the global automotive e-commerce
provider.
Note to editors:
International Motors Limited is a subsidiary of I.M. Group Limited. According
to notifications received from the I.M. Group, as of 15 December 1999, the
group had a total of 8.0 million shares in Inchcape plc, representing 9.054%
of the issued share capital.
