Re: Letter from Guinness Peat

The Board of Inchcape plc ('Inchcape' or 'the Company') confirms that its
Chairman, Sir John Egan, received a letter from Guinness Peat Group plc
('GPG') yesterday afternoon, as set out in GPG's announcement of 15 February
2001.
 
Inchcape is currently in a close period, with preliminary results due out on 5
March.  At that time, the Company will be reporting on progress to date in,
and future plans for, executing its strategy for driving shareholder value.
